Background: Pony Power Therapies' partnered with Hackensack University Medical Center to host 20 pediatric oncology/blood disorder patients and their families over 2 weeks this summer for an extended program of horseback riding and farm activities. While the patients and their siblings enjoyed the ponies and recreational stations around the farm, their parents engaged in non-riding activities with the horses, allowing them to focus on themselves and their roles as caregivers. The program is funded through the HackensackUMC Foundation with a portion of the proceeds from the 2016 Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run/Walk.
On the final day of programming, HackensackUMC and Pony Pony Therapies hosted a media day, inviting local and national news reporters to the farm. Stephen Percy, M.D., acting Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HackensackUMC and Susan Zabransky, Chairwoman of the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run/Walk were also onsite to witness the joy on the farm.
